PORT INFORMATION:

Beginning December 7, 1993, Penang Port Sdn Bhd, a government firm owned by the Ministry of Finance, took over all facilities and services from the Penang Port Commission which is now a regulatory body. Under the government's privatisation policy, the share in PPSB will be sold to the private sector although the government is expected to hold a golden share.

 
PILOTAGE:

Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels navigating in pilot district of Penang with exception of fishing vessels and vessels of 600 grt and below.

 
NAVIGATIONAL APPROACH:

a. North Channel Light Float in position Lat 5( 35.9' N. Long

   100( 12.45' E for vessels entering the harbour

     through the North Channel.Vessels awaiting Pilot can anchor

   at North Channel, in the pilot waiting area within the

   following co-ordinates:

   1. Lat 05( 35.8' N Long 100( 10.9' E

   2. Lat 05( 34.3' N Long 100( 10.9'E

   3. Lat 05( 32.7' N Long 100( 13.0' E

   4. Lat 05( 34.2' N Long 100( 13.0' E

An approach channel of 10 nautical miles x 183m wide for 1 line of traffic has been dredged at the North Channel. The available depth of water at the channel is periodically declared to port users. Current depth available is 10.2m A.C.D.

 

b. For entry through the South Channel the Pilot will be taken

   on board in vicinity of Rimau Wreck Buoy 1.6km South of

   Pulau Rimau Lighthouse. Approach through the South  

   Channel is restricted to vessels of 28m air draft - due to

   existence of the Penang Bridge. Current depth 5.8m ACD.

 
ANCHORAGE: 

The Man of War, Petroleum, Quarantine, Explosive and local vessels anchorages are marked on Charts of the Penang Harbour (AC No. 3732).

There is no specific anchorage area in the harbour for vessels other than mentioned above. The other vessels are normally anchored South of Lat 5( 26'N and North of Lat 5( 22'.80 N. Between the mainland and the island clear of the berths' fairways and shallow areas.

 
FACILITIES SUMMARY:
Infrastucture:

A. Road: Penang Port easily access by road to its hinterland via the North-South

    Expressway from the Malaysia-Thai border to the Malaysia-singapore border.

 

B. Rail: A 2.5 km rail track connecting NBCT to the Butterworth railway station by

    end of 1999. The project with a rail sliding of 80 TEUs per line is being

    constructed on RM235 million by the federal government.

 

C. Airport: the port is only 40km away from the Bayan Lepas Airport and can be

    reached in 30 minutes.

PPSB also provides a 24-hour ferry service linking Georgetown on the Island to Butterworth on the mainland. It operates a fleet of six ferries. The ferries which carry passengers on the upper deck and vehicles on the lower deck depart the terminals at eight-minute intervals during peak periods with a reduced frequency after midnight. The ferry journeys across the 3.2 km long channel takes between 15-20 minutes.
