State-of-the-art warehouse helps speed up distribution

The RM290mil state-of-the-art distribution centre (DC) built and operated by GCH Retail Malaysia Sdn Bhd, the owner of Giant, Guardian and Cold Storage, aims to reduce logistics costs for its suppliers substantially.

The savings is a result of the 50% faster turnaround time of delivery trucks to the warehouse due to the advanced processing systems and high-tech handling equipment installed at the centre.

The DC was recently launched by Dairy Farm International East Asia regional director Datuk John Coyle and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Yaakob who launched the GCH Sepang Distributor Centre together with Coyle.

Coyle believes that the DC has set new standards in logistics and distribution.

“We are proud that this facility was completed within the stipulated time frame of six months.

“GCH chose to build the facility at Sepang because of its strategic central location.

“It is near both the cargo terminal at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and the sea port at Port Klang. It is also easily accessible via the network of highways, making it an ideal logistics hub for the group’s stores throughout Peninsular Malaysia,” he said.

He added that customers of Giant hypermarkets located in the states of Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan would be the immediate beneficiaries.

“Currently, suppliers do not frequent these venues due to distance and varying shipment quantities.

“Since the DC began operations, suppliers were able to service our East Coast stores by delivering their goods to Sepang.

“The increased delivery frequencies have helped reduce out-of-stock situations and enabled stocks to be replenished speedily,” he said.

He announced that there will be distribution centres in Johor and KL soon.

On the retail outlook, Coyle said that it has been a tough 12 months but he was optimistic of the future.
