Chennai, India's second largest container gateway, is struggling with further congestion problems because of difficulties with accessing roads to and from the port.
The piling up of boxes in the yard exceed normal capacity of 8,000 at a total of 13,000 TEU, of which 6,275 are incoming and 1,455 are waiting to be loaded on ships, resulting in little dock space to move containers, let alone move them out of port, said a port official.
"Trucks are unable to come on time and pick up the boxes," the official said, hampered by poorly maintained roads and access points into the DP World-operated port, cited a report from London's International Freighting Weekly.
Export cargo has been halted until congestion eases and berth times decrease from current six day turnaround, twice the usual time.
