Bunga Teratai Satu, A 24,613 deadweight tonnes vessel owned by Malaysia International Shipping Corporation (MISC), ran aground off Cairns,Australia at about 0720 hours local time whilst on voyage from Singapore to Sydney.
The vessel is carrying 1,163 twenty equivalent unit containers destined for discharge at Sydney and burnie. Initial reports indicate
that there has been no casualty. Damage to the hull will be ascertained when refloating operations commence at first light tommorow. No pollution has been detected thus far.
The vessel is also carrying 13 containers of hazardous content (not profoundly dangerous) with IMO class ranging from 3.2 to 9. These hazardous cargo are packed accordingly to IMO specifications and recommendations. MISC do not expect these hazardous cargo to affect the environment. Moreover, these containers containing hazardous cargo are stowed on the 1st tier on deck, majority around mid-ship.
MISC is despatching three senior management personnel to supervise and assit in the refloating operation, in addition to its own personnel based in Melbourne who are already at the scene. These teams will provide full cooperation to the relevent authorities, including the Australian Transport Safety Bareau and the Queensland Maritime Authority.
All crew members are safe and all necessary assistance will be given to ensure their safety, that of the vessel and the environment
