The CEO of Port Klang Authority is determined to take her port further up the league of world container ports.
Her determination will be aided by the plans by the terminal operators at Port Klang who are expected to invest about RM2.4 billion on various port development projects under the proposed 8th Malaysian Plan (2001-2005).
According to the general manager of Port Klang Authority Datin O C Phang the planned investment was expected to further strengthen the role of the port, particularly in transforming the port as the national load center and the regional transhipment hub.
Speaking at the International Propellers' Club Japan last week, Datin O.C Phang said Port Klang, which 27th position in the league of world container ports in 1995 and further improved this to 14th position last year would strive to improve its position to the 10 placing by the year 2003.
"With an investment of about RM2.7 billion made during the 7th Malaysia Plan (1996-2000) and coupled with concerted efforts by the three privatised terminal operators namely Klang Container Terminal Bhd, Klang Port Management Sdn Bhd and Kelang Multi Terminal Sdn Bhd to enhance the quality of service, we moved up to the 14th position with container volume totalling 2.55 million TEUs last year," she said.
She said the additional capital investment proposed under the Eight Malaysia Plan would propel our aim to become effort to be within the first 10 world container ports by 2003.
Datin Phang said the improvement in the port's ranking would be aided by strong growth in container traffic which grow by about 20 per cent to record 3.1 million TEUs this year.

The growth in transhipment has been fostered by increased trade between Port Klang and regional ports, including Penang, Pasir Gudang, Belawan, Jakarta, Chennai, Yangoon and Bangkok.
Besides good feeder connection, Port Klang is also well linked with a total of 76 weekly services globally.
