PTP ACHIEVES 418,218 TEUS IN FIRST YEAR OF OPERATIONS

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) marked its first year of operations by achieving a landmark 418,218 TEUs. From these 418,218 TEUs, 37,218 TEUs was local exports and imports, constituting approximately 9% of total throughput. During the 12-month period, PTP received 698 container vessel calls and 594 non-container vessel calls. The non container vessel calls constituted largely of Star Cruise daily calls.

On the year 2000 performance, Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman, PTP CEO, expressed " In such a short time, we have come a long way. We could not have done this without our customers and would like to thank them for promoting the port in the crucial early stage. The 418,218 TEUs represents a great start and we are confident that year 2001 will see significant progress with increased port capacity ".

Year 2000 also saw four main lines begin services including Maersk Sealand, APL-NOL, K-Line and Mitsui OSK Lines. A focus on feeder services in the 3rd and 4th quarter of year 2000 saw a number of feeders including Bengal Tiger Lines, QC Container Line, Kimtrans, MCC Transport, Baywater, PDZ, Compass Shipping, and Balisa Freight. A continued focus in year 2000 on the feeder network will see growth towards all ports in the region.

In the Distripark area, PTP succeeded in securing 4 main anchor tenants for the area. Mitsui Soko, Tiong Nam, Malaysian Industrial Estates (MIEL) and Kenwood Logistics. The four players will be beginning activities in year 2001.
