Transshipment picks up

Johor Port is beginning to attract more transshipment traffic from the region. This is reflected in the recent volume of containers handled at the port.Container transshipment traffic recorded an impressive growth in 2000.Transshipment traffic grew by 74 per cent to 93,382 TEUs in 2000 compared with 53,737 TEUs in the previous year.

The Director of Port Operation, Dr Lim Meng Soon said the huge surge in the transshipment traffic was in line with the Federal Government’s effort to promote Port Klang as the transshipment hub.

Johor Port handled in excess of 7,700 transshipment TEUs per month from various regional ports.

“In 2000, transshipment volume made up 14.1 per cent of the container traffic handled at Johor Port. With the increasing number of dedicated feeder operators between Johor Port and Port Klang total transshipment volume is expected to grow further. Today, the Port is regularly served by six dedicated feeder operators to various regional ports in Indonesia and Malaysian Ports, “ said Dr Lim.

Commenting on the transhipment trend at Pasir Gudang the Managing

Director of Jet Feeder Services Sdn Bhd, Pui Khiang Khang said: “The box

movement between Pasir Gudang and Port Klang sector has been very encouraging. We have deployed the 250-teus mv Joanna which calls Pasir

Gudang every Wednesday and Saturday. We are planning to mount an additional two weekly calls to four sailings per week."

"Although we are new service provider in the service route, the response from MLOs is very encouraging. Our utilisation of the ships is about 80 per

cent every sailing," said Phui.
