Maritime Conference to Explore Impact of geo-politics on industry

The 4th Asia Maritime & Logistics Conference & Exhibition 2006, organsied by the Malaysian Shipowners’ Association (www.malaysianshipowners.org) will be held 11-12 September 2006 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

Planned as a world-class event, the Conference has lined up leading international personalities who are expected to lead off a discussion on the growing influence of geo-politics in re-shaping demand and supply in the marketplace.

The two-day conference managed by PortsWorld (www.portsworld.com ) will include an international maritime exhibition and will focus on key industry cross-cutting issues, including managing cross cultures in businesses.

“The Asia Maritime & Logistics Conference has established itself as a major international maritime event, having had attracted participants and distinguished speakers from across the world,” said the Chairman of the Steering Committee for the 4th Asia Maritime & Logistics Conference & Exhibition 2006, Hj Abdul Aziz Meor Ngah.

The event, which has emerged as a landmark maritime event in the region, is in an attempt to showcase Asia's achievements, its role and its growing leadership in the global maritime industry, he said.

The organizers expect the 4th Asia Maritime & Logistics Conference and Exhibition 2006 to be attended by about 800 participants from all over the world.

“In addition, we expect more than 40 exhibitors from various maritime and logistics sectors to participate in the Exhibition,” said Aziz.

The theme selected for the Conference this year is “THE CHANGING WORLD: ADAPT, OR PERISH”

“The selected theme is aimed at exploring challenges facing the industry in a world that is changing rapidly and dramatically as a result of geopolitical factors,” Aziz said.

Some of the key topics for discussion at the Conference include:

• Geopolitics: The Change & Challenge
• Managing Cross Cultures
• Regulatory Reforms & Regimes
• Technology & Techniques
• Supply Chain Management
• Discontinuity Key to Continuity

The Faculty of Speakers is drawn from leading international personalities who will invited to explore the extent of these changes and the nature of its impact on the global maritime and logistics services industry.

The Chairman of Malaysian Shipowners’ Association, Ir Nordin Mat Yusof said the 4th Asia Maritime & Logistics Conference & Exhibition 2006 coincides with the 30th anniversary of the founding of MASA.

“Overseas invitees will include our fellow members of the Asean Shipowners’ Association, Asian Shipowners’ Forum as well from relevant international governmental and non-governmental maritime related organization,” said Nordin.

Nordin noted that the 3rd Asia Maritime & Logistics Conference that was held in October 2004 was attended by more than 550 participants from 31 countries, making it one of the best-attended shipping events in this region.

Some of the speakers at the past events included from the International Maritime Organisation, The World Bank, International Labour Organisation, International Tanker Operators’ Organisation (Intertanko), World Shipping Council, US Border Customs, Japan Shippers Council, Indian Ministry of Shipping and Australian Maritime Safety Authority,

“We want to build on the success of this Conference that will take a look at global industry trends and its impact on shipowners in Asia,” he said.
