OOCL enhances Northport's global connectivity

Hong Kong-based Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd (OOCL) has further strengthened its presence in the Asia Middle-East Service linking Port Klang with the deployment of the bigger capacity ships. M.v. OOCL Antwerp, the first S-Class vessel built at the Koyo Dockyard Co. Ltd., of Imabari Shipbuilding.

The 5,888-TEUs vessel made her maiden voyage to Northport in Port Klang from Singapore on 26 May 2006. The vessel loaded/unloaded 712 TEUs before it sailed to Jebel Ali, said the Managing Director of OOCL (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Richard Hew.

The entry of the bigger S-class ship will replace the existing mid-range carrier with 3,000 TEUs in the competitive trade lane.

“There is no doubt our bigger capacity ship in the middle east service will provide shippers with more space and enhance Northport’s global connectivity between Port Klang and major ports in the Far-East and Gulf/Indian Sub-Continent regions,” said Hew.

“As containerized trade continues its rapid growth and expansion, there is an increasing need to offer high-quality services in order to effectively serve the Middle East market. This state-of-the-art of S-Class vessel and her sister ships, comes at a most opportune time; providing us with the necessary assets to offer ever-greater service to our customers,” he said.

OOCL Antwerp incorporates latest design with modern technology and fully complies with the international regulations including environmental protection. It is the third of the S-Class vessels to be delivered this year from total eight ships ordered.

The full rotation of the twice-weekly service covers five major ports in China and Jebel Ali in UAE. The full rotation of the service connects Shanghai, Ningbo, Hong Kong, Shekou, Singapore, Port Klang, Jebel Ali and Port Klang. The Westbound service of Asia Middle-East Service calls Port Klang every Wednesday and on the Eastbound, the ships berth every Saturday.

The first ship under the AMS banner, OOCL Ambition berthed at Northport, Port Klang on 10 May 2006 and sailed to Jebel Ali said Hew.
