Malaysian shipowners to hold meeting

Malaysian Shipowners' Association will hold its annual general meeting in Shah Alam, Selangor 12th April 2003.

The meeting, apart from taking a hard look at the growth in domestic and global trade conditions, is expected to review a wide range of industry activities and issues affecting the shipping industry in general.

The industry's latest concern includes the impact of the war on Iraq for which it was recently consulted with by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, the National Economic Action Council as well as the Ministry of Transport.

The consultations initiated following a Cabinet directive to ministries to evaluate the immediate and long-term impact of the war.

MASA expects the immediate impact to be somewhat minimal, including some increases in war risk insurance premium on ships entering the Gulf region as well as the impact of fluctuations in oil prices.

The longer term effects of the war remain uncertain as this would depend on the length and damage the war on Iraq.

MASA is also viewing with anxiety the developments relating to the SARs as ports, crews and shipping lines are being requested to address the matter by taking appropriate measures to prevent the spread of the diseases.

Meanwhile, the meeting, which will be chaired by its chairman, Dato Hj Mohd Ali Yasin (CEO/managing director of Malaysia International Shipping Corporation) is also expected to discuss developments relating to maritime security and safety, in particular new rules and conventions that have been introduced or are expected to enter into force soon.

The measures include those introduced by US and adopted by the International Maritime Organisation.
