PTP goes for new record

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), heading for another year of record run, has become the first port in Malaysia to handle more than 1 million TEUs in the first quarter.

The fast growing transshipment hub posted a five per cent growth for the first quarter 2005 compared to the same period in 2004.

The port handled 1,005,044 TEUs in the January-March of this year compared with 957,495 TEUs in the previous quarter.

Local cargo volumes handled by PTP also surged ahead with 44,927 TEUs handled in the first quarter this year – up by 23 per cent on the 36,399 TEUs handled in the same period in 2004.

Export cargo via the terminal rose by 36.75 per cent from 25,381 TEUs in the January-March of 2004 to 34,709 TEUs for January-March 2005.

Transshipment volumes also increased from 921,096 TEUs first quarter 2004 to 960,117 TEUs in first quarter 2005

The increase in local cargo is partly attributed to increased activity within the Free Zone where a new halal food distribution hub is currently being developed.

The hub is a designated zone within 40 acres of the prime industrial land location, and focuses on activities involving regional and international distribution of halal products.

During the first quarter 2005, the port also started receiving the first batch of 15 new Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) yard cranes from IMPSA Port Systems.

PTP and IMPSA signed a contract for the RTG’s back in May 2004, and the units will be used in the port’s Phase II Development project
