The vast prospect for expansion of rail transportation between Malaysia and
Thailand is expected to take the centre stage at the forthcoming Asia
Railway Conference 2005 to be held in Petaling Jaya next Monday.
The conference, to be opened by the Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Chan
Kong Choy, will hear presentations from the State Railway of Thailand (SRT)
and KTM Berhad (KTMB), the Malaysian railway corporation.
SRT will be represented by its Governor, Dr Chitsanti Dhnasabhan who will
chair session 1 of the conference which will hear presentations by Bangkok
based ESCAP, the Ministry of Transport Malaysia and a paper by KTMB managing
director Datuk Mohd Salleh Abdullah who will give an insight into the
development and future of rail transportation in Malaysia.
SRT will also present a paper on the development and future of rail
transportation in Thailand while there will be presentations by
Malaysia-Thailand landbridge operators which represent a major breakthrough
in the development of cross border trade between the two countries.
The scheduled landbridge service linking Port Klang and Bangkok is seen as a
more viable and economical option than the “all blue-water” transport mode.
Issues relating to trade facilitation measures, namely custom documentation
on either side of the borders will be highlighted while a presentation by
MASKargo will hear of the prospects for combining air with rail in
transshipment of cargo.
Singapore Land Development Authority will reveal the experiences of
developing the most efficient mass rapid transit systems in the region at
the two-day conference that includes a exhibition as well.
Local and overseas exhibitors will display and highlight their products and
services relating to rail transportation.
The organizing chairman of the Asia Railway Conference & Exhibition, Abd
Radzak Abd Malek said trade visitors to the exhibition, who can travel on
KTM Communter Services at discounted fare, also stand to win lucky draw
prizes.
