Prime Minister, Datuk Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will deliver a key-note address
at the 3rd Asia Maritime & Logistics Conference to be held in Kuala Lumpur
4-5 October 2004.
The organizers of the conference, Malaysian Shipowners Association said the
Prime Minister confirmed he would officiate and address the international
conference which has adopted the theme "Maritime & Logistics: The Dynamic
Marketplace."
"We are indeed honoured by the acceptance of our invitation by the Prime
Minister to address the 3rd Asia Maritime & Logistics Conference 2004 which
has emerged as an important platform in Asia to take the initiative on
matters affecting the global maritime industry," said the chairman of the
organising committee of the 3rd Asia Maritime & Logistics Conference, Haji
Abdul Aziz Meor Ngah
He said the theme reflects the prevailing mood of the industry and
challenges facing the maritime transportation services sector.
Aziz said the maritime and logistics services industry was facing tremendous
challenges and changes brought about by new regimes as well as by a dynamic
marketplace.
"The face of the industry is changing very rapidly with a raft of new
measures affecting manning standards, safety, security as well as management
and operation of shipping and logistics. We are also witnessing an
unprecedented scale of developments taking place in the market place with
freight rates, charter hire rates and the sale and purchase markets setting
new records," he said.
Aziz said the 3rd Asia Maritime & Logistics Conference 2004 would attempt to
explore the vast changes and developments in a global perspective.
For this reason the faculty of speakers at the conference has been drawn
from distinguished international speakers and organizations.
There will be 14 presentations, including from international organizations
like the Citigroup Global Markets (Hong Kong), Eurasia International (China)
Ltd, World Shipping Council (US), Lloyd's Register of Shipping (UK),
Capgemini China, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Japan), Filipino Shipowners'
Association, PSA Corporation (Singapore) and HSBC Shipping Finance (Hong
Kong).
Aziz said several others leading speakers from reputable maritime
transportation service providers, supply chain management operators and
government agencies have also been invited to at the conference that is
expected to attract about 600 participants.
A highlight at the international maritime conference in Kuala Lumpur will be
a round table discussion on Multilateral Global Trading System: Impact on
Transport & Logistics.
The presentation to be led by Citigroup Global Markets Asia Ltd (Hong Kong)
will include a panel comprising Mr Ted Kawamura, the managing director of
the Japan Shippers Council as well as representatives from the Indian
Ministry of Shipping and the European Union have been invited to
participate.
