The national maritime portal – www.portsworld.com
- which was launched by the Deputy
Transport Minister, Tan Sri Ramli
bin Ngah Talib last week has
elicited wide response from the
port and maritime communities.
Several ports, shipping lines,
other transport service providers
and users among the 200 people
from the industry who attended the
launching were impressed with the
maritime portal which has already
secured the sponsorships of
Northport Corporation Bhd, Port of
Tanjung Pelepas, P& O
Nedlloyd, China Container Shipping
Line, Malaysian Maritime Academy,
Century Logistics Sdn Bhd,
Telekoms Malaysia and Halim Mazmin
Bhd
Managing director of P&O
Nedlloyd, Patrick Lim said the
maritime portal offers an
effective platform for his
shipping line – the world’s
second largest – to market and
promote its services to users.
“We are impressed with the
structure of the portsworld.com
and we have developed a link with
the portal to market our services
on the Internet,” he said.
Brian Paul from PTP’s
marketing and corporate
communications department said
with the high traffic recorded by
the maritime portal, it promises
to offer PTP a useful medium to
reach to market both locally and
overseas.
In congratulations Ports World
Sdn Bhd on the launching of the
maritime portal, he expressed
PTP’s hope that portsworld.com
would continue to rise in
prominence in the shipping and
port sectors.
Among others who complimented
the launching of the national
maritime portal include the
president of the Port Klang
Shipping Agents Association , V
Muthiah, the director general of
Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA)
Datuk Cheah Kong Wai, the
executive director of the
Chartered Institute of Transport,

The portal, which is only and
the most comprehensive and
authoritative web-site on the
Malaysian maritime industry on
Internet, was developed by Ports
World Sdn Bhd, a fully
Malaysian-owned transport resource
and data management company.
The portal, which offers free
access to maritime news online and
comprehensive data and information
of the Malaysian maritime
industry, serves as a platform or
a collaborative marketplace for
operators and users in the
maritime transport sector to
promote, market and transact their
businesses.
“As a
“maritime infostructure” www.portsworld.com
has all the attributes of the
making of a national maritime
portal I am particularly pleased
to note that the development of
such a major portal has been
undertaken entirely by private
initiative offering the public
free access,” said the Deputy
Minister of Transport at the
launch.
He said the development of the
National Maritime Portal is a
private sector initiative
consistent with the aspirations of
the Government which wants the
private sector to respond with
urgency to the opportunities
generated by the k-based economy
as reflected in the Third Outline
Perspective Plan (2001-2010).
“A
platform such as the one provided
by www.portsworld.com
also offers an opportunity to
“globalise” our maritime
industry,” he added.
“As a focal point of
publicly accessible data and
information on the national
maritime industry, there is no
doubt that www.portsworld.com
needs the support and assistance
to succeed in projecting a
positive image in the global
marketplace,” he said.
www.portsworld.com
is a structured portal consisting
of three components – a data
warehouse, a maritime news portal
and an interactive real-time
marketplace which is made up of
freight exchange, a port exchange,
a maritime job exchange, a
shipping exchange and a maritime
mall.
