MASKargo boost for Northport

In a significant development that is expected to vastly enhance the distributional role of Northport, at Port Klang, and also break new ground in “sea-air” modal carriage of cargo in the country, MASKargo has picked Northport Distripark as a cargo consolidation centre.

MASkargo, the air cargo operating arm of Malaysia Airlines, is expected to use the Northport Distripark, located within the Customs free zone in Port Klang as a staging point to penetrate into the “sea-air” modal carriage of cargo.

The airline cargo operating company, which control more than 60 per cent of the air cargo business at the Advance Cargo Center (ACC) in Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Sepang said Northport Distripark would be an extension to its ACC KLIA.

To pursue its plans, MASkargo has set up a full-fledged office with its staff and IT requirements for agents to submit documentation.

MASkargo is expected to handle first shipment of sea-air cargo on December 20, 2002 from Northport Distripark..

Agents will be able to do consolidate or break down shipments at the Distripark since the airway bills will be cut at the Distripark and then the cargo will be placed on Pengangkutan Kargo Udara MAS truck-flight and carried to KLIA for transshipment.

To promote the development of air-sea transshipment activities on a wider scale, MASkargo would also truck sea-air cargo for other foreign airlines calling at KLIA.

To simplify and smooth the flow of documentation in tandem with the movement of the cargo, MASkargo has come out with  a new documentation process after discussions with the port terminal operator, freight forwarding and trucking companies.

Details of this new documentation flow will be highlighted at presentation in Kuala Lumpur International Airport on December 19, 2002.

At this meeting, agents and shippers will get to a first a hand account of the  sea-air transshipment activities from MASkargo.

MASkargo will also mount a joint marketing effort with Malaysia Airports Bhd and  Northport covering prospective markets in Indonesia, Myanmar and other neighbouring countries.

Northport Distripark is a fully owned subsidiary of Northport (Malaysia) Bhd.

The 73.29 acres distripark is located adjacent to the container terminal 1 and 2 in Northport. It offers ample warehousing area with a total of four warehouse covering 470,000 sq ft. The warehouses are equipped with dedicated facilities to meet the requirement of cargo handling, storage value adding and other distribution activities.
