Nominations invited for transport industry awards

 

Users and providers of services in the transport industry have been invited to send in their nominations for the Transport Industry Awards 2001, to be presented by the Minister of Transport Dato’ Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik on 13 August 2001 at a leading hotel in Subang Jaya, Selangor.

 

A panel of judges, headed by the secretary-general of the Ministry of Transport, Datuk Zaharah Shaari, which met on 19 July, finalized on a set of criteria that would be applied in selection of the recipients of the Awards.

                 

Datuk Zaharah, who chaired the meeting at the Ministry in Putrajaya, said in addition to the Transport Personality of the Year 2001, a new award, namely Transport Company of Excellence of the Year 2001 has been created beginning this year.

 

She said anyone from the Transport Industry may nominate an individual or a company that complies with the general criteria for the respective Awards.

 

The prescribed nomination forms for the Awards are available from Ports World Sdn Bhd (Tel: 03-30057228; Fax:03-30057138, or may be downloaded at www.portsworld.com).

 

The five-member panel of judges will select the recipients for the Awards from the list of short-listed nominations by the Chartered Institute of Transport (Malaysia National Section) which has taken the lead to organize the Awards.

 

Datuk Zaharah said nominations for the Awards must meet the set of criteria which the panel has decided in order to be eligible to be considered for the Awards.

 

For the Transport Personality Award 2001, the panel decided that those nominated must meet the following criteria: 

  • Minimum of 10 years in the transport industry

  • Be at the helm of an organization/s

  • Constructively still in service

  • Has shown fine entrepreneurial skills or exceptional management expertise

  • Has displayed outstanding qualities of leadership in a diligent and honest manner

  • Has contributed to the development of the national transport industry

  • Has served or shown commitment to fulfill specific national objectives

For the Transport Company of Excellence Award 2001, the panel will base its selection on companies which meet the following criteria:  

  • Has measurable track-record of performance in the industry of not less than five years

  • Meet specific financial performance criteria, including acceptable rate of return on investment

  • Fulfill specific national objectives (such as contributions to the economy, achieving high level of efficiency and productivity)

  • Display character of a well-run organization with a sense of commitment to good management practice and system

  • Achievements are recognizably and beneficially national in nature

  • Measurable gains, benefits or savings (and in time) to users

  • Contributed to innovative developments in the transport industry

  • Adequate use (or plan) of IT as a platform to enhance productivity or recorded notable gains in productivity

  • Contributions to the community at large, including adopting environmentally friendly approach towards the conduct of business

The panel urged those nominating candidates for the Awards to explain how their nominations meet the selected criteria.

 

The panel of judges will meet on 9 August 2001 to select the recipients of the Awards which will be presented at a gala dinner to be attended by about 700 people from the industry and relevant government agencies.
