Conference to create awareness on modal shift to rail

An international conference to analyze emerging new trends in rail transportation and to explore opportunities in rail freight forwarding will be held in Kuala Lumpur on April 25 and 26, 2005.

The 1st Asia Railway Conference and Exhibition will be officiated by Transport Minister Dato’ Sri Chan Kong Choy and will showcase an exhibition.

Organised jointly by KTM Bhd and Ports World Sdn, the inaugural conference on rail transportation would highlight recent developments in the Malaysian rail freight transport scene, giving first-hand accounts of rail transport as the alternative mode of transport that is both efficient and economical.

Organising chairman of the conference, Abdul Radzak Abd Malex, who is KTM Berhad Freight Services General Manager, said the conference hoped to raise awareness on the rail modal among public policy planners and players in the logistics sector.

“Given the scale of growth in demand for transport services in the future, countries in the region including Malaysia, should seriously consider, in the short and medium term, a modal shift from road to rail,” he said.

Abd Radzak added that apart from the economical aspect, rail modal option would relieve stress on roads and ports as well as help in the conservation of the environment.

A faculty of distinguished speakers have been identified and invited, which include key individuals from KTM Berhad, State Railway of Thailand, Land Transport Authority of Singapore, UN-ESCAP, Northport (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Blue Scope Steel Ltd, SAP (Germany), Dicom Malaysia, MASKargo, Alstom Transport and Lloyds Register.

An exhibition will be held in conjunction with the event featuring historic milestones in rail freight transportation in Malaysia, promotions by key industry players as well as participation of companies highlighting the latest technology and innovations in railway engineering.
