Cargo surges at local airports

Total cargo movements at Malaysian airports rose by 13.5 per cent to 73,012 tonnes in January 2005 compared with 64,301 tonnes in the corresponding period of 2004.

KL International Airport handled 49,578 tonnes of cargo to various destinations in the first month of this year.

Almost 90 per cent of the cargo volume handled at KLIA bound from or to International market.

The remaining 10 per cent or 5,000 tonnes came from the domestic sector.

Cargo volume at the other airports in the country rose by 11.8 per cent to 23,433 tonnes in the month of January.

Domestic cargo movement recorded highest growth with 28.5 per cent totaling 9,488 tonnes in the month of January 2005.

Meanwhole, MASkargo, which remains the main cargo carrier at KLIA, sees cargo prospects remain favorable in line with the high global trade forecast.

The increased belly space capacity to China and India and supplemented by additional freighter operations to Europe both via KLIA and Shanghai/Hangzhou hubs will have a positive impact on cargo revenue said the carrier.

However total passenger movements via the KLIA was down by 4.8 per cent to 1.62 million passengers in the month of January 2004.
