Westport dropped in Transpacific service rationalization

In a moved aimed at arresting the current worsening freight market in the US-Asia trade, the New World Alliance has decided to re-organise its service strings that will see Westport, at Port Klang being left out in the new port rotation.

The member lines of the Alliance comprising APL, Hyundai Merchant Marine and MOL announced that they will axe their Pacific Northwest Express service and fold it into their US East Coast all-water service.

To make up for the for the string cuts, the group of lines will add Japanese and west coast North America stops to two other services.

The decision to re-organise the service strings is seen as a response to calls for member lines to act independently “withdraw” capacity on the Pacific (and also the Europe-Asia trade lanes).

The East Coast service port rotation will remain unchanged except for the addition of a westbound call at Oakland, after transiting the Panama Canal on its return to Asia.

The Alliance announced that the improved East Coast service will commence November 21, 2001 with the new sailing from Oakland.

The port rotation for the new ECS service will be Chiwa, Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Kobe, Nagoya, Tokyo, Manzanillo, Panama, Miami, Charleston, Norfolk, New York, Norfolk, Charleston, Manzanillo, Panama, Oakland, Tokyo, Kobe; with a return to Chiwan.

The Pacific Northwest String, the PS1 service will be re-organised with additional eastbound calls at Nagoya and Tokyo and a new call at Vancouver to serve both eastbound and westbound markets.

The new PS1 port rotation will be Seattle, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Yokohama, Yantian, Hong Kong, Singapore, Yantian, Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Nagoya, Tokyo, return to Seattle.

The PS3 service will include additional calls at Seattle and Vancouver for westbound cargo with a port rotation of Los Angeles, Seattle, Vancouver, Tokyo, Nagoya, Kobe, Shanghai, Kobe, Tokyo, return to Los Angeles.

In order to make the additional calls at Japan and North West Coast calls, the Alliance has to drop the Port Klang call on the PS1 service and also Oakland on the westbound Oakland call on the PS3 service.

The alliance will operate eight fixed-day weekly services in the transpacific plus Asia-US east coast services, one of these together with Evergreen Marine Corporation.

The New World Alliance is also looking at reducing capacity in the Asia/Europe trade.
