Container hauliers serving Northport at Port Klang have agreed to enter the
final shipping data and details of containers in the export document, thus
ending a irrelevant dispute that generated by shipping agents who felt it
was not their responsibility to do so.
Following the intervention of the chairman of Port Klang Authority, Datuk
Yap Pian Hon, the issue on who is responsible for the keying in of export
booking and container details was settled amicably last week.
Dato' Yap met up with representatives from International Shipowners
Association (ISOA), Port Klang Shipping Agency Association (PKSAA),
Container Haulier Association of Malaysia (CHAM), Association of Haulage
Malaysia (AHM) and Malaysian Shipowners Association (MSA) in a bid to defuse
the situation that could have been potentially disruptive to the smooth flow
of trade at the port.
Dato Yap said haulers agreed to continue keying in the seal number, export
booking and container details into the Northport System.
"However, the shipping lines have agreed not to penalize the hauliers in the
event of mistakes," he added.
The shipping agents are expected to assume any legal and financial liability
arising from any mistakes in the documentation process flow.
"We will implement various measures to avoid the incidents of mistakes by
doing a reconciliation of the containers before loading into the ships to
correct any mistakes made earlier." Dato' Abdul Latif Abdullah, the Chairman
of ISOA, the body of shipping agents representing foreign shipping lines
calling at local ports said. |
