KL maritime event set to take center stage

Setting the stage for what is expected to become the largest gathering at a maritime event in Malaysia, the 1st Asia Maritime & Logistics Conference 2002 will trigger off week-long meetings of some of the top leaders from the global maritime industry.
 
Organised by the Malaysian Shipowners Association (MASA), the two-day Conference to be held 14-15 October 2002 and officiated by the Minister of Transport, YB Dato Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik, will feature a distinguished faculty of speakers making presentations on a number of important and pressing issues facing the global maritime transportation industry
 
The conference, that has lined up 17 papers, a CEO's Forum and panel discussions, will be preceded by a gathering of about 200 worldwide agents of Malaysia International Shipping Corporation Bhd and who are also expected to attend the landmark conference.
 
The 1st Asia Maritime & Logistics Conference 2002, that expects to attract more than 400 participants from 90 countries, will be followed by meetings of world's leading protection and indemnity (P&I) clubs.
 
The UK P&I Club will hold its meeting in Kuala Lumpur while the first time in history, the London P&I Club, which counts major blue-chip shipping lines among its clients, will hold its annual general meeting outside London when it meets in Kuala Lumpur after the conference.

The chairman of the organizing committee of the conference Datuk Hj Mohd Ali Hj Yasin, who is also the chairman of MASA, said growing concern on global maritime security and safety initiatives would be among the papers that will provide an insight into the vast and varied challenges facing the global maritime industry.
 
The session on maritime security initiatives will hear directly from the World Shipping Council as well as the US Customs Service and this will be followed by panel discussion with representatives the Royal Malaysian Customs and the Royal Malaysian Navy.
 
Ali, who is the managing director/CEO of MISC Bhd, said highlight of the Conference would be the CEO's Forum - the first such event in a maritime conference to be held in the region.
 
A top-level representation at the CEO's Forum, that will be coordinated by Ybhg Dato Hj Mohd Ali Hj Yasin, Vice President (Logistics & Maritime_ Petronas and Managing Director/CEO MISC Bhd, will include Mr F Jacobs from APL-NOL, Mr Jon Chadwick, Chairman of Shell Malaysia, Tsunerari Tokugawa, Adviser to NYK of Japan and Mr Eduard Blank of Nestle Global Transportation (Switzerland).
 
The conference organizers have invited several industry experts from leading organizations such as the International Maritime Organistaion, Australian Maritime Safety Authority, London P&I Club, SAP Malaysia, Richards Butler (London) and others.
