Moderate increase in air cargo  

Total cargo movements at Malaysian airports rose by 4.4 per cent to 999,295 tonnes in 2005 compared with 957,071 tonnes in the corresponding period of 2004.

Cargo traffic at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang rose marginally to 653,653 tonnes of cargo to various destinations last year compared with 651,746 tonnes in the previous year.

Almost 90 per cent of the cargo volume handled at KLIA bound from or to international market while the remaining 10 per cent or 63,757 tonnes came from the domestic sector.

Cargo movements at other international airports in the country recorded double-digit growth rate of 13.2 per cent to 345,641 tonnes in 2005.

Total international cargo volume rose by 15.3 per cent to 218,920 tonnes in 2005 while cargo volume for other domestic destinations rose by 9.8 per cent to126,720 tones in 2005.

Meanwhile airports in the country handled 41.57 million passengers movement in 2005 as against 39.43 million passengers in the previous year.

KLIA handled 23.21 million passengers of which 63.89 per cent or 14.83 million passengers were to or from international arrivals.

The increase in passengers and cargo traffic was reflected in the increase in aircraft movements in the country totalling 469,655 in 2005 from 454,969 movements in 2004.

KLIA registered 181,341 aircraft movements in 2005, an average of 503 aircraft movements per day.
