UMW makes rapid inroad RTG-market

UMW Group, thru its subsidiary UMW Engineering Sdn Bhd, has made an impressive inroad into the fast-expanding port industry. UMW Engineering received additional orders right after delivering its first contract to supply a fleet of landside container handling equipment for Northport Malaysia Bhd. in Port Klang.

The award for the supply of six units Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes to Northport in 2004 marked the entry of UMW into port crane manufacturing sector. UMW has been involved in supplying container trailers and specialty vehicles for various ports.

UMW Engineering erected all the six units at Northport before commissioning the cranes, generally used for stacking of containers.

“Since then we have made good progress into the manufacturing and supply of Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) and Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) to other ports in the country,” said Rohaizat Abdul Rahman, General Manager of UMW Engineering Sdn Bhd.

“The reliability and operational efficiency of the first RTG batch have won the trust and confidence of Northport to place order for another four units,” he said. The company expects to deliver all the four RTG units by end of this year.

Rohaizat said the company can deliver RTG in the form of fully erected or completely knocked down, depending on customers’ needs.

UMW Engineering, an ISO 9001 certified company, is a licensed fabricator for RTG and RMG cranes in Malaysia. To date the company has won three separate contracts to deliver a total of 18 units of RTG to local ports.

“We are pleased with the support and confidence shown by Northport on our products. We provide the whole range of services from design, manufacture, supply and commission of the cranes,” said Rohaizat.

In addition to Northport, UMW Engineering has also won the award from Penang Port Sdn Bhd to deliver eight RTG units to its North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT).

“Although there are other players in the port crane sector, we are confident that we have a niche. Our existing manufacturing capacity of up to 20 units a year will enable us to penetrate wider market within Malaysia. We have a proven track record. Together with our technical partner, we are also exploring opportunities outside the country,” said Rohaizat.
