PK-Indonesia connectivity widen further

Reflecting on the expanding opportunities in the transshipment trade between Malaysia and Indonesia, a total 15 weekly services now serve between Northport, Port Klang and various ports in Indonesia.

The wider feeder connectivity has not increased the service frequencies at Port Klang but has also created wider options for Malaysian shippers to reach Indonesian market.

The increase in the connectivity of shipping services between Malaysia and Indonesia is reflected in the increase in lifting of containers that rose 30 per cent in the first five months period of this year at Northport.

The connectivity has also increased the attraction of Northport Port to mainline service operators (MLOs) as base to transshipment containers to regional and international markets.

The new services include regular sailings offered by between the Sea Consortium, PIL, NYK Line, China Shipping, Interasia Line and PT Djakarta Lloyds, Regional Container Line, Excel Shipping, PACC Line, China Puhai Sipping, Hanjin Shipping and Cosco Line.

The latest to serve the trade is Interasia Lines with the arrival of 234-teus Mv Zhe Hai 316 on last Saturday (July 1, 2006).

The weekly call started by Interasia Lines under Indo Malaysia Express (IMX) which sailed from Port Klang - Belawan - Penang - Port Klang.

This fixed day service is expected to call Port Klang on every Monday and Thursday, Belawan every Saturday and Penang every Wednesday. According to Interasia Lines official the trade to/from Belawan, Indonesia had been increasing and the insertion of the new IMX service is to cater to the requirements of the market condition.

Earlier PT Jakarta Lloyds (Persero) Medan has initiated a new container service linking Northport at Port Klang and Belawan, Sumatera effective 20th June 2006.

This is a joint operation between lltizam Suci Services Sdn Bhd and Jakarta Lloyds Persero Medan.

Meanwhile the managing director of lltizam Suci Services Sdn Bhd, Mohd Azman Salim said the service has good support from the main line operators calling at Northport to feed their cargo via our service to reach Indonesian market.

Currently the full rotation of the 208-TEU MV Semarang Caraka Jaya III covers Port Klang-Penang-Port Klang-Belawan and Port Klang. The new service offers one of the best transit times between Northport and Belawan sector said Azman.

“Our 12 hour streaming time between the sectors will become a plus-point to attract more shippers to use our service. We have set-up extensive marketing network in the central and northern region of Peninsula Malaysia and in the Indonesia, Jakarta Lloyds Persero Medan will link this service with their other domestics’ network in the Archipelago.

He said the demand for the first service on 20 June has been very encouraging and hoped the common feeder service between Port Klang and Belawan would be well receive by shippers from Malaysia and Belawan.

Speaking after presenting a memento the Captain of MV Semarang Caraka Jaya III, the deputy chief executive officer of Northport, Haris Abul Aziz said Northport at Port Klang value each and every feeder operators as they are playing important role in feedering regional traffic via mother vessels calling at our terminal.

The arrival of feeder common feeder operators like PT Djakarta Lloyds is very significant in our efforts to attract to more mainline operators at Port Klang, said Haris.
