NCB formulates medium and long terms strategies

NCB Holdings Bhd has been formulating supporting strategies for the group covering the medium to long-term perspective, including improving the quality of services and the positioning of the Northport

Chairman of NCB Hodings Bhd, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri (Dr) Ahmad Sarji Bin Abdul Hamid said the commissioning of the recently completed Berth 14 has placed Northport in a stronger and more competitive position to effectively respond to the discerning needs of its customers.

“Our continuous efforts have borne results in that Northport has been able to attract a good number of new customers. Northport was also successful in securing the support of a leading global shipping line that selected Northport as its operating base, said Ahmad Sarji in 2005 Annual Report.

With the full commissioning of CT3, made up of Berths 12, 13 and 14, the port gained additional capacity to handle a further 1.0 million TEUs per annum, bringing the total capacity to 4.0 million TEUs per annum.

Work to convert the adjoining Berth 14 was completed ahead of schedule and opened by the Prime Minister on 29th April 2005.

To support the landside operations at the new terminal, the company has completed the development of 20 acres of backup land for container storage.

Northport recorded a throughput volume of 2.6 million TEUs in 2005.

The container mix in Northport stood at approximately 50 per cent for both import and export containers.

Total volume handled through Port Klang for the year 2005 was 5.5 million TEUs, reflecting a growth of 5.7 pr cent compared with 5.2 millin TEUs handled in year 2004.

Ahmad Sarji said Kontena Nasional has made considerable inroads in the targeted areas when it undertook a major shift of in its focus and to expand the non-haulage activities of the company.

Its move into warehousing and distribution activities has met with encouraging success and the impact of this is expected to be more visibly felt during financial year 2006.

The company made good progress in its venture into warehousing, inventory management and distribution services resulting in its appointment as the providers of these services by a major international furniture maker and retailer, and engagement in a similar role by two major clients with large-scale operation in motor assembly and distribution. Kontena national has also been continuing its efforts at cost containment and customer retention.
