KN to dispose non-core operation

Facing an increasingly competitive market, Kontena Nasional Bhd expected to realign its operation to focus more on activities which are showing better potential as long-term revenue contributors.

“In view of that we are formulating medium-to long-term strategies for the group of companies to improve the quality of services said Tan Sri Dato’ Seri (Dr) Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid, chairman of NCB Holdings Bhd, the parent company of Kontena Nasional.

“NCB group has identified warehousing and distribution sector as priority area for the haulage arm. Kontena Nasional is now developing new warehouse facilities to support its entry into the new services of warehousing, inventory management and distribution,” said Ahmad Sarji

“We are beginning to strengthen our core operation and liquidating non-core business of Kontena Nasional Berhad,” he said.

Towards this, the haulage company arm has entered into a conditional sale and purchase agreement with Sime Malaysia Region Berhad to acquire 3,000,001 ordinary shares of RM1.00 each in Sime Integrated Logsitics Sdn Bhd, a company incorporated and engaged in the provision of warehousing and distribution services, for a cash consideration of RM4.35 million representing 50 per cent equity interest and on share.

Kontena Nasional which handled 509,270 TEUs in 2004 has liquidated some of non-core operating companies.

These include the operation of Konnas Agencies Travel Services Sdn Bhd, Konnas Sarawak Sdn Bhd and PAFA Management Services Sdn Bhd, Kontena Nasional owns 100 per cent interest in the Konnas Agencies Travel Services Sdn Bhd and 43 per cent in Konnas Sarawak Sdn Bhd.

The move is expected strengthen its performance in the current financial year of the company which recorded a loss of RM3.6 million on the turnover of RM133.7 million last year.
