Tractors eyes regional equipment market

In a move at penetrating the fast-growing terminal handling equipment market in the region, Tractors Malaysia has signed a technical collaboration agreement deal with Terberg Benschop B.V Holland to produce customized and specially-built vehicle for the market in Malaysia and the Asean region.

"Under the agreement, Tractors Malaysia will extend its marketing outside ASEAN and has been given the option to supply Terberg's special vehicles to countries within the Asia Pacific region," said the manufacturing manager of Tractors Malaysia, Yoong Kee Sin.

"We have been actively participating in the various tender processes and hope to access the regional market to expand our products," he added.

Yoong said terminal tractor produced in Malaysian with Terberg technology has been well received in Malaysian market.

Yoong said within a year of the collaboration, the company managed to sell a total of 77 units' terminal tractors to Malaysian ports sector.

"The first batch of 14 units of YT180 Terberg Terminal Tractors rolled to North Butterworth Container Terminal in Penang from our manufacturing plant, Tractors manufacturing & Assembly (TMA) in Pasir Gudang," he said.

The vehicles will initially carry 32 per cent Malaysian content, but TMA is targeting to increase the local content to 50 percent in two years.

This was followed by the delivery of 30 units to Westport on early August this year and a total of 33 units of terminal tractors will be delivered to Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas, earlier in the year.

"Realising the operational capability of our tractors, Westport has further re-affirmed its commitment to acquire an additional 15 units of Terberg tractors from Tractors Malaysia," said Yoong.

According to Yoong the terminal and ro-ro tractors come with powerful 4x4 and 4x2 drivelines that are suitable for handling heavy cargo of up to 350 tons gross combination weight.

All custom-made tractors are built to conform to a modular concept with ergonomic designed safety cabs fulfilling the FOPS/ROPS safety tests, robust chassis construction and low exhaust emission.
