Penang Port
has started work on the expansion of its North Butterworth Container
Terminal that will be extended by a further 200 metres.
Under the contract, dredging and reclamation work for the development of the
NBCT Phase IIB expansion project is handled by Tidal Marine.
The senior general manager of Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), Mohd Naina Marican
said the expansion entails the construction of second access bridge,
reclamation of 25 hectares of land area for container yard and utilities as
well as procurement of container handling equipment.
The project is targeted to be completed in 15 months and will raise the
container handling capacity at NBCT to one million TEU per annum.
The port will be acquiring three more post-panamax cranes and several units
is Rubber tyred gantry cranes for the landside operations.
Currently the terminal is operating with six quay cranes and 20 transfer
cranes.
When completed the NBCT will stretch 900-metre berth with a fleet of nine
quay cranes and is expected to meet the port's container berth capacity
requirement until the year 2005.
At the same time the reclamation of 25 hectares of land area will also
provide an additional yard space of 4,500 total ground slots - sufficient to
satisfy requirements until the year 2007.
Besides North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) containers at Penang
Port are being handled at Butterworth Container Terminal.
The two berths at BCT draw 331 metres long and are capable of handling
270,000 TEUs.
The operation of the terminal is supported three gantry cranes and 12
transfer cranes.
Upon completion of the expansion work at NBCT the container handling
facilities from BCT will be transferred to NBCT. |
