Close on heels of a recent report
that China Ocean Shipping (Group)
has placed orders for 10 container
ships worth more than US$700
million, including five of the
largest to be built in the world,
Taiwan-based Evergreen Marine
Corporation, is expected to confirm
one of the largest containership
orders of all time.
Market rumours suggest that the
Taiwanese giant will order up to 30
ships for as much as US$1bn,
something the company has not
denied.
The company said it was waiting for
different shipyards to submit
prices.
It added the main purpose is to
replace our old ships, although
nothing can be confirmed at the
moment.
Reports said Evergreen is looking to
buy ships with a capacity of 6,300
TEUs each, something the liner
refers to as an S-type, and that the
vessels would be deployed on the
transpacific.
Sources suggest that the orders will
be over an eight-year period
starting in 2005.
Evergreen currently lies fourth in
terms of slots down two places from
a few years ago and if the company
orders a full thirty 6,300 teu
ships, that would move up to third,
above P&O Nedlloyd, breaching the
half million slot mark.
