The volume of containers handled at principal containers ports in the
country grew moderately by 4.5 per cent to 12 million TEUs in 2005.
The two port terminals at Port Klang, Northport and Westport, handled
accounted for 46 per cent of the total container traffic handled by ports in
Peninsular Malaysia.
As a national gateway port, Port Klang handled 5.5 million TEUs compared
with 5.2 million TEUs recorded the previous year.
At the southern tip of the Peninsula Malaysia the combined container traffic
of Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas and Johor Port, both which come under the
preview of Johor Port Authority, breached the five million TEUs mark.
PTP posted 4.17 million TEUs and Johor Port handled 836,744 TEUs in 2005,
bring their combined total to 5.01 million TEUs.
Penang Port, which managed to handle 794,500 TEUs in 2005, up from 772,000
TEUs the port handled in 2004.
On the eastern seaboard of Peninsular Malaysia, Kuantan Port, managed and
operated by Kuantan Port Consortium Sdn Bhd handled 119,000 TEUs in 2005.
However, the box volume at the eastern corridor port which is emerging as a
petrochemical hub port slipped marginally by 3 per cent from 122,700 TEUs
handled in the previous year.
In Sarawak the four principal container handling facilities namely Bintulu
Port, Kuching Port, Miri and Rajang Port handled at total of 360,000 TEUs
last year.
Bintulu Port, which is pushing hard to secure a regional hub port status,
took the lead with a total of 148,000 TEUs, while Kuching Port handled
143,000 TEUs last year.
Sabah Port Sdn Bhd handled a total of 208,000 TEUs last year contributed by
traffic handled at port facilities in Tawau, Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan.
