CMA CGM is to acquire some of the largest containerships in the world at
what is said to a bargain price by enlarging the four super post-panamaxes
that are currently on order.
The four will be increased in size from 8,200 TEUs to 9,163 TEUs nominal
capacity.
The extra cost of adding another 40ft hold will come to about US$9m per
unit, CMA CGM chairman Jacques Saadé.
When the ships were contracted from Hyundai Heavy Industries in early 2003,
the price would probably have been around US$80m apiece. Today, South Korean
yards are quoting US$129m for the latest generation of 9,600 TEUs giants.
The highest price actually agreed to date is thought to be around US$115m
that Mediterranean Shipping Co will be paying for four 9,200 TEUS ships from
Samsung Shipyard. |
