Qatar Liquefied Gas Co. II (Qatargas II) has closed an international tender
for the charter of six to eight LNG carrier newbuildings for its B train.
The numbers of LNG carriers to be procured for the train are six in terms of
250,000-cu.m vessel (Qatarmax), seven in terms of 230,000-cu.m ship (Superflex)
and eight in terms of 210,000-cu.m vessel (Qatarflex).
According to sources, there is a growing possibility of the company settling
on 250,000-cu.m ships eventually.
If this proves true, they will be the largest LNG carrier newbuildings ever
to be adopted in the world, as the biggest LNG carrier newbuildings so far
adopted have been 210,000-cu.m-type vessels for the Qatar project.
Also, Qatar Gas Transport Co. is expected to acquire 40-60% stakes in the
newbuildings for the B train, according to sources.
