Air cargo market in Malaysia expands

Air cargo movements between South Asia and Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang recorded remarkable growth in 2005. The overall cargo traffic at KLIA in Sepang rose to 653,653 tonnes in 2005 compared with 651,746 tonnes in 2004.
 
Almost 90 per cent of the cargo volume handled at KLIA bound from or to international market while the remaining 10 per cent or 63,757 tonnes came from the domestic sector.
 
South Asia registered highest growth of 19.1 per cent and contributed close to 40,000 tones last year compared with 33,256 tones in the previous year.
 
South Asia region – India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Maldives - remained as the fifth biggest air cargo market for Malaysia after North East Asia, Europe and South East Asia and Southwest Pacific.
 
Within South Asia, India remained as the largest market for Malaysia. Total cargo volume between KLIA and the seven major Indian airports - Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai – registered 32.36 per cent totaling 23,745 tones in 2005 compared 17,939 tones in 2004.
 
All the airports registered steady growth of air cargo volume in 2005. Kolkata is the new landing point in India during the period under review with volume of aircargo reaching 1,516 tones in 2005.
 
The year 2005 is also significant for the air cargo growth between Malaysia-China sector.
 
Besides traditional destinations of Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Hong Kong and Xiamen, air cargo carriers calling at KLIA was also linked five more new destinations namely Kunming, Nanning, Shenzhen, Haikou and Xi An.
 
Analysis by carriers revealed that Transmile Air recorded highest growth at KLIA in 2005.
 
This was followed by Air China, Sri Lankan Airlines, Saudi Arabian, United parcel services and Cathay Pacific.

Malaysia Airlines, which handled closed to 70 per cent of the air cargo at KLIA, was ranked tenth position in term of growth for the international performance in KLIA.
