Sea-air transshipment continues to grow

MASkargo which embarked on an ambitious plan to develop "an airport within a seaport" couple of years ago handled an average of 32,954 tonnes of i-port traffic per month between January-April 2006.

i-port traffic innovated by MASkargo contributed 131,817 tonnes in the January-April period of this year compared with 126,723 tonnes in the corresponding period of last year.

Besides i-port traffic, cargo volumes from other major five international airports also registered positive growth in the first four months of this year.

The five major airports in the country handled 409,696 tonnes of air cargo this year, compared with 391,593 tonnes during the period under review.

Cargo volumes handled by MASkargo at KLIA totaled 212,243 tonnes and 51,459 tonnes at Penang International Airport during the period under review.

Meanwhile, to further cope with the expanding demand air cargo space, the carrier took delivery of the second and final Boeing 747-400 freighter aircraft in Seattle, United States of America on 31 May 2006.

The addition of these two new freighters to MASkargo's existing fleet is expected to boost the airline's cargo business aggressive drive to provide additional capacity to key markets.

With the delivery of the new B747-400F freighter, MASkargo will now be able to operate triangular flights such as Kuala Lumpur-Dubai-Amsterdam and related sectors, which will result in savings in landing costs.

Meanwhile MASkargo has also announced that it will be stop accepting bookings and sales for aircraft belly space effective immediately on 99 domestic non-trunk routes in Malaysia, for travel on and after 1 August 2006.

This is due to MASkargo’s parent company, Malaysia Airlines' exit from the non-trunk routes.
