UBC Bulk Malaysia starts operation

UBC World Bulk has set-up a Malaysian outfit, UBC Bulk Malaysia Sdn Bhd as a joint venture between UBC World Bulk and the local bulk and rail land feeder operator, Infinity Group of Companies.

“Malaysia is one of the important markets for us in Asia. UBC Bulk Malaysia will be the first venture for UBC world outside Europe, There are his huge potential for us by redefining the flow of bulk transportation in the country” said the Chief Executive of World Bulk, Paul N. Anderson who was recently in Kuala Lumpur.

Anderson said less than two per cent of the bulk cargoes are being transported in 30ft containers in Malaysia.

The situation is totally different in Europe whereby almost 60-70 per cent of the bulk cargoes are being transported or distributed in 30ft containers.

“In fact we have 15,000 30ft containers operating in dry bulk markets throughout Europe via a network of offices, transport depots and agencies,” Anderson said.

He said there is huge scope for the company to expand its bulk distribution in 30ft containers which offered good cost savings option than transporting in 20ft containers.

The 30ft intermodal containers optimise weight-to-space for lower costs. Before loading cargoes containers lined with virgin food grade polythene liners.

“Upon reaching silos we unload with specialized vehicles using rotary valves for discharge. We place new liners for each shipment amd storage in containers at container parks to reduce storage costs in silos,” said Anderson.

“In Europe UBC mainly cater for the needs of chemical industry and food producers of grain, rice and sugar. We hope to do the same with Malaysian market particularly to redefine the logistics solutions for the feed mill industries, cement, sugar, flour, olechemical industries and petrochemical industries,” said Anderson.

In addition to operating bulk containers, UBC – through Linertech, a group company of UTI (United Transport International) which is the holding company of UBC acquired three years ago – is Europe’s largest manufacturer of dry bulk liners, producing some 200,000 liners annually at its factory in Elland, West Yorkshire and at other locations.
