Kuantan
Port Consortium Sdn Bhd, the port
operating company of Kuantan Port,
is seeking to widen its product
base.
“We
may expand into logistics services
to allow us to provide more
value-added services to our
expanding customer base,” said the
managing director of KPC, Datuk
Mohamed Awang Tera.
“KPC
is not only a port operator. We are
already in the maintenance and
repair of containers through our
wholly owned subsidiary, KPPS.
Next, KPC plans to joint-venture
with haulage companies and other
interested parties to explore other
business opportunities,” said
Mohamed.
AT
present there are five haulage
companies serving Kuantan Port. They
are are Kontena Nasional Berhad,
MISC Haulage Services Sdn Bhd,
Konsortium Logistics Bhd, Multimodal
Freight Sdn Bhd and Tiong Nam
Transport Services.
“This
is timely move as the port will be
operating the first dedicated
350-metre container terminal in the
eastern corridor by middle of this
year,” he said.
Mohamed
said work on the container terminal
has been progressing well and part
of the terminal will be ready for
commercial operation by June this
year.
“We
have invested some RM100 million for
the development of new container
berth together with other shore side
handling facilities,” he added.
Plans
are also being drawn to increase the
350-metre long container berth
presently under construction by
another 100 metres in anticipation
of more container throughput in the
future.
The
port, which handled 76,339 TEUs with
12 regular services last year is
expected to receive an additional
service with the completion of its
new dedicated terminal.
Three
more container ship calls weekly at
Kuantan port will increase the
existing 12 calls per week will to
15 calls per week.
“The
increase is due to additional
container volume expected to be
transported via rail link from the
Kertih petrochemical industries,”
Mohamed said.
Currently
Regional Container Line, Uniglory
Lines, Pacific International Lines
and New Icon lines serve the port.
