Westport at Port Klang last week handled the first shipment of crude palm oil for Europe.
The historic shipment was made at the Stolthaven (Westport) Liquid bulk terminal when parcel tanker, Flores berthed to laode 7,500 tonnes of crude palm oil.
Three pipelines (discharging 250 tonnes per line) were used in the handling of the cargo, which was made up of 7,500 tonnes of crude palm oil and 750 tonnes of specially refined, bleached and deodorized 'olein' liquid cargo.
The loaded palm oil will be discharged at Rotterdam, Netherlands. Prior to the loading at Stolhavent Westport terminal the 182.55 metres carrier also loaded 11,000 tonnes of crude palm oil cargo from Sandakan, 10,000 tonnes from Lahad Datu and 7,000 from Pasir Gudang before calling Westport.
Stolthaven Westport terminal handled liquid bulk cargoes for domestic distribution as well as a regional distribution.
The terminal is connected to two Westport's wharves, (Jetty LBT1 & Jetty LBT which are .9km and 1.2 km from the nearest transfer pit via 3 stainless steel dock lines and 2 carbon steel dock lines of 12, 8 and 6 inch diameters.
Operations of the facility commenced in November 1997 with loading and discharging industrial chemicals, which include fatty acids, alcohols, esters, amines, etc.
In June this year asphalt was handled for the first time following which the handling of oleo chemicals began in July this year.
According to Ambrose Peter Felix, General Manager of Stolthaven, the terminal has been designed and constructed to the highest safety standards and equipment installed complies with standard industry specifications. Tanks are fitted with a dedicated piping system serviced by individual pumps to the tanker loading bay, where tanker filling is carried out by means of loading arms, drop lines or bottom filling.
To ensure product integrity, storage tanks with dedicated supporting facilities are provided.
The present facility comprises 36 tanks of various sizes ranging from 500 m3 to 5000 m3. The combined storage capacity is 35,700 m3 made up of 17,800 m3 of carbon steel of which 14,000 m3 is coated and 3,900 m3 are stainless steel tankages. All tanks are fitted with nitrogen blanketing facilities and foam chambers.
