In a welcome move that aims to fill
the yawning gap in publications on
maritime economics, a team of 51
distinguished members of the
International Association of
Maritime Economists, have published
one of the most comprehensive
publications for the first time
covering a wide variety of maritime
issues and sectors.
The Handbook of Maritime Economics
and Business contains 39 reference
chapters which are primarily based
on research carried out over a
number of years, covering 11 broad
areas of maritime economics.
Areas covered include maritime
economics and globalisation,
international seaborne trade,
economics of shipping markets &
cycles issues in liner shipping,
maritime safety and labour markets,
aspects of shipping management, port
economics and management and aspects
of international logistics.
Edited by Costas Th. Grammenos,
contributors include academics from
30 different countries, including
from Malaysia, Dr Rawindaran Nair,
who co-authored with Bernard Gardner
and Peter Marlow of University of
Wales, Cardiff a chapter on The
Economic Regulation of Liner
Shipping" The Impact of US and EU
Regulation in US Trades."
Dr Rawindaran, an economics graduate
from Universiti Malaya, served the
Malaysian Civil Service for more
than 20 years, including the
Ministry of Finance before be left
the service in 1997 to pursue a
master degree in legal aspects of
marine affairs from University of
Wales and earlier this year obtained
a doctorate from the same
university.
The Handbook of Maritime Economics
and Business, released last month,
has been recommended as an reference
book for apprentice and experienced
practitioners in maritime business
world as well as for undergraduates
and post-graduate students. |
