Kontena Nasional in valued-added service

In a move aimed at broadening its base now centred in container haulage, Kontena Nasional Sdn Bhd, the country’s largest container fleet operator, is moving in a big way to offer valued-added services with its recent tie-up with a major logistics and distribution company from the Netherlands.

KN, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the public-listed Northport Corporation Bhd, has entered into a joint venture agreement with TBIH BV that is also expected to provide the company a breather in the wake of severe competition it is now facing in the light of the dramatic surge in capacity brought about by licensing of more the more container hauliers.

The JV, Tibbett & Britten Kontena Nasional Sdn Bhd, will carry out joint operation and management of distribution centres for the intake, storage and despatch of stocks and providing distribution services to destinations in Peninsular and East Malaysia and Brunei.

The new company will market itself as a logistics and distribution company specialising in supply chain management in Malaysia and Brunei.

The marketing activities of the JVC will concentrate on food, personal product, clothing and fast moving consumer goods.

The equity participation of KN and TBIH BV in the JVC is proposed on the basis of 40 per cent and 60 per cent equity interest respectively for the first seven years.

Thereafter, from the eighth year onward, the equity participation of KN and TBIH BV in the JVC that will have an authorized capital of RM20 million, shall be 51 per cent and 49 per cent respectively.

TBIH BV which is incorporated in Netherlands is a member of Tibbett & Britten Group plc, a United Kingdom quoted multi-national logistics service provider focused on supplying warehousing, distribution and supply chain management services to major retailers and multi-national manufacturers.

Tibbett & Britten Group plc was founded in 1958 and now has operations in 35 countries with business turnover of Sterling 1.5 billion Pound for the financial year ended 31 December 2000.

KN, a subsidiary of NCB, has been the leading company in Malaysia in providing container haulage and freight forwarding services.

KN expects through TBKN it would be able to participate in supply chain management effectively and therefore further enhance its competitiveness resulting from the completeness of services provided by KN.
