MMI eyes bigger rail equipment market

MMC Metal Industries (MMI), the Malaysia's largest and only licensed manufacturer of railways rolling stocks, is eying for the bigger share of the railway sector as the country, especially in the light of rapid expansion of rail infrastructure in the country.

The company has submitted formal proposal to the government to enter into the production of coaches for passenger, EMUs and also for the production of locomotives.

Most of the KTM Bhd coaches now in used by KTM Bhd are imported.

"We have all the technology and think it is about the time that Malaysia used local expertise. We have submitted our proposals and waiting for the green light," said the chairman of MMC Engineering Group Bhd, Datuk Ir Dr Hj Ahmad Zaidee bin Laidin.

"MMI needs government support to spearhead further development of the Malaysian railway industry," he added.

MMC Metal is a fully integrated manufacturer of freight wagons and rolling stocks with complete facilities for the total design and engineering.

It is the only licensed manufacturer of bogies in ASEAN for Amsted and Standard Car Truck both of the USA.

Ahmad Zaidee said the approval for the coaches manufacturing will make MMI as the full fledged railway equipment supplier for the passenger and freight sector.

He said this after handing over the last batch of its 195 units of BCF wagons to KTM Bhd in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Ahmad Zaidee also said MMC Metal was the only recipient of ISO/IEC G25 for laboratory accreditation in Malaysia and one the few in Asia.

"This certification is indeed a bonus to MMC Metal as we aim to develop partnership in the passenger, EMUs and possibly locomotives sector. MMI has also received the recognition of Association of American Railroads Quality Assurance program, the only certification body of railroad products for USA, Lloyds Register of London and Germanischer Lloyds," Ahmad Zaidee said.

The company's involvement with KTM, the national railway company started way back in 1989 with the supply of Amsted Ride Control Bogies.

To date, MMI has manufactured more than 3,000 freight bogies and 800 wagons for KTM Bhd.

Ahmad Zaidee said MMC Metal would continue to strive to produce the highest quality product by meeting customer's requirements at competitive coast and timely delivery in order to explore global market aggressively.

Ahmad Zaidee said to date we have penetrated more than 13 countries including Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Ghana, Hong Kong, Japan, Myanmar, New Zealand, Singapore and Sri Lanka.
