The new 75-km rail Kertih-Kuantan link developed by Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), to serve Kertih integrated petrochemical complexes in Terengganu and Gebeng integrated petrochemical complex in Kuantan will be operated by KTM
Bhd.
"We are in the final stage of discussion with KTM Bhd, the national railway operating company on the operation matters," said the Chairman of MISC Bhd, Tan Sri Datuk Mohd Hassan
Marican.
Petronas has acquired rolling stocks and other handling equipment for the rail network that will facilitate the movement of containers between Kertih and Kuantan port.
The line will serve as a safe, reliable and consistent mode in the transportation of raw petrochemical material finished products (both in liquid and solid state) like ammonia, acetic acid, PVC, VCM, paraxylene, benzene, ethylene and propylene.
The single-track line allows freight services a speed of up to 80 kms per hour and could accommodate future passenger trains traveling at speeds up to 120 km per hour.
In the initial stages the rail link is projected to handle some 35 to 40 TEUs or one and a half trains load of cargo daily via Kuantan Port and assist in the transformation of Peninsular Malaysia' s East Coast into one of Asia Pacific's leading petrochemical hubs.
