Responding to bullish prospect in demand for its rapidly expanding demand
for its gateway port, the Port Authority of Thailand has opened a tender for
a massive expansion of Laem Chabang port.
The plan calls for trebling of the capacity of the country's main box port.
The tender, estimated to be worth over US$400m, to run six new terminals was
opened at the beginning of the month.
The tender combines a mix of build operate transfer terms for terminals A3,
D1 and D2 and concessions to operate C1, C2 and D3. The tender however is
for all six terminals as a single contract and operators will not be able to
bid for individual or smaller parcels of terminals.
The project would represent a massive increase in capacity by in the range
of 4.5m TEUs a year to six million TEUs a year, nearly trebling the 3.18m
TEUs the port handled last year.
Industry source expect global port operators like Hutchison Port Holdings,
PSA International, P&O Ports and APM Terminals are expected to make the bid.
Terminal operators have a two-month window in which to prepare bids with the
tender closing on September 1. |
