PTP beefs up landside operation

As part of its on-going equipment acquisition programme under its Phase One development, Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has purchased a total of four forklifts for stacking of laden and empties from Fantuzzi Reggianne of Italy and an additional reach-stacker from Luna of Spain.

In addition, another two units of the empty stacker forklifts will arrive at the port by end March 2001 and the remaining two units of the laden stacker forklift will be delivered in April 2001.

The purchase of the equipment is in response to customer needs on flexible and competitive methods of shifting of containers within the container yard area.

The empty & laden stacker forklifts will be utilized for container stacking, storage and movement within the container yard area.

With the purchase of an additional reach stacker, PTP will now have a total
of two reachstackers in the terminal offering a maximum lifting capacity of 45
tonnes and stacking containers up to five high.

The reach stacker is also equipped with a state-of-the-art operational and safety electronic system, which is able to detect discrepancies in container weight and balance.

In a statement, the Chief Executive Officer of PTP, Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman said the four forklifts are our first set of forklifts and is essential towards ensuring
efficient yard planning.

“With the state-of-the-art I.T. system, efficient ratios and experienced motivated workforce, PTP will be well set towards setting a world standard of excellence for vessel productivity,” he added.

PTP now has a total of 14 Super Post Panamax quaycranes, two mobile harbour cranes, 36 Rubber-Tyred Gantry cranes, four forklifts, two reach-stackers and a full complement of prime movers and trailers.

By year-end, an additional 10 quaycranes and 36 Rubber-Tyred Gantry cranes will
be added for PTP to increase its current handling capacity to 4.5 million TEUs per annum in year 2002.
