Westport
has set its target to achieve a
million man-hour exposure with no
lost time injuries (LTI) an
achievement that could allow it to
secure OSHAS 18001 recognition.
"Our
lost time injury and accident
incident rate (AIR) in 2001 was
0.026% less than the standard of
1,440.19 hours. The lost time injury
frequency (LTIF) for the port
industry is less than 0.5, but
Westport managed to record
0.027," said Westport’s
chief, Tan Sri G Gnanalingam.
Speaking
at the official launching of
Westport's sixth consecutive safety
& health week campaign
Gnanalingam said Westport views
health and safety of all persons in
the port of prime importance.
“We
consider safety very seriously right
from the start when we began
operation in 1994,” he said.
Gnanalingam
said the port endeavors to operate
in a way that protects safety,
health and environment not only for
employees but also for our port
users.
"We
have to continue remaining vigilant
and be on our toes striving to
maintain and improve our safety
standards since safety, health and
environment in the port are seen as
responsibility of both management
and employees,” he added.
In
conjunction with the campaign, a
week long Safety & Health
exhibition was held on the ground
floor of the Westport Business
Centre to increase awareness among
its staff and port users.
The
event officially launched by the
Minister of Human Resource, Datuk Dr
Fong Chan Onn on last week.
