KTM handles refer containers

In an attempt to strengthen its role further in the growing popularity of the block train services, KTM Bhd has started to venture into reefer cargo handling for which the railway corporation has acquired the necessary reefer rolling stocks.

The Malaysian railway corporation will be taking delivery of the 55 special bogies with temperature-controlled reefer points by end of this month.

The bogies manufactured from Indonesia will be discharged at Port Klang and will be commissioned into service by early next year.

According to the general manager of KTM Bhd freight Services, Abdul Radzak Malek the recent high growth of container traffic over the last couple of years has prompted the corporation to look into value-adding services like to offer reefer capacity as part of the block train services.

"We are in good position to provide an alternative option for shippers to transport their reefer cargoes," he said.

"We have invested about RM15 million to acquire these special bogies with temperature controlled points to explore the potential for the transportation of refrigerated goods such as fresh water fish, fruits and flowers from Cameron Highlands and Thailand to Port Klang, Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas and Singapore," said Radzak.

He said KTM Bhd hopes the new venture into reefer transport would be received well by shippers to transport their cargoes as the rail network is well connected to all seaports and dry ports in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Radzak noted that cross border container land bridge linking Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore has taken off well due to good response due to the efforts of the four block train service providers namely TS Transrail (M) Sdn Bhd, Freight Management (M) Sdn Bhd, TS Allied Trans Sdn Bhd and PTP Landbridge Services Sdn Bhd said Radzak.
