A powerful new
industry voice is expected to emerge with the proposed merger between the
International Tanker Operators Association (Intertanko) and the
International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners (Intercargo).
Intertanko representing tanker and Intercargo bulk carrier owners have
announced that the process of setting up a common secretariat is well
underway.
The two organizations announced the merger following meetings of the
respective boards last week.
Details of their alliance have not been revealed.
It is however, the two organizations will maintain separate identities and
membership structures.
Meanwhile, for the first time in this region the two organizations will at a
single event review developments affecting the trades under their charge at
the 2nd Asia Maritime & Logistics Conference that opens in Kuala Lumpur next
week.
Peter Swift, the managing director of Intertanko will speak on the
structural transformation and changes in the tanker trade while the chairman
of Intercargo, Frederick Tsao will present his views on the changes taking
place in the bulk trade at the conference to be officiated by the Deputy
Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
The Deputy Prime Minister will deliver a key-note address at the two-day
conference organized by the Malaysian Shipowners Association. Others
speakers at the conference include from the International Maritime
Organisation, The World Bank, World Customs Organisation, International
Labour Organisation, IBM, Rolls Royce and Petronas. |
