Biport Bulkers expands

Biport Bulkers Sdn. Bhd will be enhancing its bulk terminal capacity including tank farm installation and berthing capacity.

The sister company of Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd is developing an additional berth to cater for the increasing number of calls by palm oil barges to the terminal at Bintulu Port.

The new 90 m LOA facility will complement the existing 220 m LOA berthing facility which can accommodate vessels up to 50,000 dwt said the terminal manager, Datuk Haji Abd Malek Dato’ Demang Hussin.

Abd Malek also said the volume of bulk cargo is expected to rise further as there would be more oil palm plantation to be developed in Sarawak.

The state government has plans to increase the current acreage under oil-palm from 450,000 hectares to million hectares by end of Ninth Malaysia Plan period, with an average of 100,000 hectares to be planted annually for the next five years.

As such the development of supply driven tank farm facilities at Bintulu with direct pipeline to the upcoming refineries like Kirana Edible Oil and Borneo Edible is seen as timely move, said Abdul Malek.

“Currently we have three pipelines for loading various type of palm oil products from our tank farms and two discharging pipeline. We plan to increase three additional pipelines for loading and two additional pipe lines for discharging activities at the terminal by end of October this year,” said Abd Malek.

He said Biport Bulkers Sdn. Bhd was the only company that specializes in the storage and the main export outlets for vegetable oils in Sarawak.

He said the company was expanding the current tank farm capacity and would be developing an additional 24 storage tanks of various sizes and capacity which will raise the present capacity to75,600 mt from present capacity of 39,050 mt.

Biport Bulkers Sdn. Bhd which started its in 2004 recorded a total throughput of 339,640 metric tone of liquid cargo with Refined Bleached Deodorised (RBD) Olein contributing 130,071 metric tonne, RBD Palm Oil contributing 95,904 metric tonne, Crude Palm Oil 57,755 metric tones and others contributing 55,910 metric tonne.

Total export by Biport Bulkers for the year under review is 291,156 metric tonne with 47 vessel calls.
