Samsung Heavy Industries has unveiled its world’s largest container carrier,
and has begun marketing to more than ten major ship owners, including
Seaspan of Canada, MSC, OOCL and OFFEN of Switzerland.
Following the world’s first development of the 6,200 TEU class container
carrier in 1999, Samsung led the industry with the world’s first 7,700 TEU
class in 2000, the 8,100 TEU class in 2002 and the 9,600 TEU class in 2003
to nearly double the size of the carriers in five years.
The 12,000 TEU class carrier can carry 12,000 20-ft containers, equivalent
to cargo of 1.5 million 29-inch TV sets worth 500 billion Won (approximately
US$450 million) or 1.2 billion pieces of US$5 semiconductors worth 6
trillion Won (approximately US$5.6 billion).
The 12,000 TEU class container ship spans 383 metres in length, and can
cruise at the same speed of 26 knots as the smaller 9,600 TEU class carrier.
Its double-hull fuel tank is designed to prevent environmental pollution in
the event of accident.
Samsung expects to win more than ten orders per year for the 12,000 TEU
class container carriers. |
