Liquid bulk throughput takes center stage at Johor Port

Liquid bulk traffic has emerged as the single largest type of cargo at Johor Port.

The director of port operations of Johor Port Bhd, Dr Lim Meng Soon said based on the throughput handled in the first eleven months of last year, the growth in liquid cargo has been encouraging.

The port at the south-eastern tip of peninsular Malaysia, handled a total of 10.32 million tones of liquid bulk traffic in the January-November period of this year.

Liquid bulk traffic posted 35 per cent growth compared with the volume of liquid bulk traffic handled previous corresponding period.

This is the first time liquid bulk traffic crossed the 10 million tonne threshold.

The huge surge in liquid bulk throughput the share of liquid bulk of the total traffic by 7.82 per cent point to 43.04 per cent in 2001.

Palm oil shipment constituted the largest volume of liquid bulk cargo handled at Johor Port.

The cargo is handled at a dedicated specialised 657 metre twin-berth jetty which is rated as one of the world’s most efficient vegetable oil handling facilities.

The port remained as the world's largest centre for the export of palm oil and is confident of handling higher volume with the aggressive marketing drive undertaken by the Felda Johor Bulkers, the largest and most advanced vegetable oil tank farm operator in Malaysia located at Johor Port.

The completion of the dangerous cargo jetty also significantly contributed to the increased handling of growth of liquid bulk traffic at the dedicated terminal in Johor Port.

However, the volume of containers, which dominated the traffic scene at Johor Port for more than a decade recorded reverses for the first time.

The port handled 587,547 TEUs in the first eleven months of this year after years of sustained growth.

Despite the setback, Lim said the port remains confident of a better performance in 2002.

“Being a multipurpose port we are in better position to provide total package solution to port users,” said Lim.

Total traffic Johor Port rose by 11 per cent to 24 million fwt in the January-November period of 2001 compared with 21.67 million tones during the corresponding period of last year.
