P&O Nedlloyd Logistics has moved swiftly into the US distribution arena with the purchase of three companies serving the domestic supply chains of major retail corporations and wholesalers.
The newly separated logistics division of the Anglo-Dutch container line has bought Gilbert East, Gilbert West and Gilbert Air Cargo for an undisclosed sum.
As the main part of the privately owned Gilbert Services group, the three companies have a combined annual turnover of nearly US$140m, compared with US$200m for P&O Nedlloyd Logistics, a statement released in Kuala Lumpur by P&O Nedlloyd M.A. Sdn Bhd said.
The asset-light Gilbert companies specialise in consignment consolidation. The P&O Nedlloyd supply chain subsidiary was not prepared to release volume throughputs for the three.
Johan Nanninga, head of P&O Nedlloyd Logistics, said the acquisitions reflected the "growing trend for the integration of international and domestic supply chains in the US".
Imports from Asia to the US were growing, he said.
